Car Seats

Copied from our blog:

Now that Amy is 1, the time to get her a front facing car seat is coming closer. (We're not quite ready to be done with the carrier that we can just bring in the house without waking her up. I love that. But before long, it will be time to change.) So I was just curious if any of you parents have opinions of what you did/ didn't like in the car seats you've gotten. What kind of features should we look for? Do you have favorite brands or even specific car seats? We have been pleased with graco so far and would be happy to get another graco car seat. I plan to do some research/ price shopping before we get one, but I thought this would be a good way to start the process. Thanks!

Here's what we did. We were astonished at how much car seats cost, so we opted to go the cheap way, especially because we had to buy two at once. There is a program offered through the Utah Department of Health that if you take one of their car seat classes, they'll let you buy a new car seat for $25. It's a model you find in the stores for $45-$50. It's definitely not the fanciest or cutest car seat, but they have worked for us so far. You've got to figure that the UDOH wouldn't sell an unsafe car seat. You just have to sacrifice on looks, if that's important to you. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8054497 There is a link for it at Wal-Mart. You can come try ours out if you want :)

You have to have either WIC or Amy on Medicaid to qualify. Here is a link for that info.

Good luck with your search! It's a big transition from the carriers to a big kid's car seat!

What I mostly care about (besides safety, of course, but unless a seat has been recalled, it's basically safe) is how it will fit in my car. So I checked out this site: Car Seat Measurements.

Our forward-facing is a Graco Comfort Sport. No complaints.

We have used the cosco alpha omega for both of our children. My oldest has been in two car accidents with two seperate omegas and they both have been safe and have kept him safe.

Though my question for you is...Hasn't she, being one, out grown here infant carseat? My son out grew the infant carseat at four months granted he was a big boy but most infant carseats only go up to 20 pounds and no more than 26 inches.

According to the graco website snugride car seats are for up to 22 pounds and 29 inches. From my crude measurements just now, Amy is 27 1/2 inches tall and right about 20 pounds. She's always been pretty little. She still does fine in her carrier - feet hanging off the edge, but fitting fine.

We use the cheap one from walmart ($40-45, depending on a sale or not)(both forward and backward facing). We like it alright. There are some carseats that face forwards that you pull a lever and it reclines. You can snap it back into place when she done napping. If they weren't $100 or more, we would have got that.

I suggest looking at consumer reports and see what is the best out there first. I would do my research before purchasing one. I don't know about you but I wouldn't want some cheap car seat for my kid....I only want the best for my child and that includes their car seats. I definately wouldn't buy the cheapest one out there, you never know it could fall apart on you and then you'd just have to buy another. You could really do some damage to your child if they are in a cheap ol' car seat!!

Bonnie, I just read a post on a blog about the best car seats out there. http://www.babycheapskate.blogspot.com/
They've done their research already so it might save you some time.
Good luck in your search.
